Blackmagic's New Cameras & IBC Gear Launches
🌐 The end of the pocket cam

Welcome back to VP Land.
Blackmagic’s got some new gear and there’s a whole bunch of product launches from IBC.
Let’s dive in.

MAIN STAGE
Blackmagic Goes Full Frame…But Pocket Sized

Blackmagic dropped a bunch of new product updates: full frame sensors, mini cam updates, plus a surprise camera app. Here are the details.

Blackmagic Cinema Camera 6K
BMD finally has a full-frame option. But it’s in the pocket cam body (which has now dropped the pocket name).
What’s New:
Open Gate 3:2 full-frame sensor (max resolution 6048 × 4032)
L‑Mount lens support
CFexpress recording
H.264 proxy recording

Great updates, but it’s still in the DSLR body, which doesn’t have a lot of fans.

Despite the full-frame recording and recording improvements, this is not a replacement for the Super 35 6K Pro model, which has built-in ND filters.
Hopefully, this is a teaser for an updated URSA for NAB 2024. Full frame is great but also looking forward to seeing proxy recording support in the URSA.
$2595. Check out the full product page here.

Blackmagic Micro Studio Camera 4K G2
Excited to see the Micro Studio camera get an update. These are really handy for an affordable way to add extra angles to broadcasts and live streams.
Update to 4K (previously HD), 12G-SDI Micro BNC connectors. Supports 10-bit uncompressed video up to 2160p60, 2-channel audio output
Control Options: Input supports tally, control of the built-in color corrector, lens control from an ATEM switcher
Compatibility with ATEM Mini: HDMI connector outputs 1080, supports all control features when used with an ATEM Mini switcher
Records Blackmagic RAW to external USB-C drives - this is a nice improvement, the only way to record on previous models was with an external recorder like a HyperDeck.
$995. Check out the full product page here.

Blackmagic Camera App
This was a surprise - an iPhone app for high-quality video recording (basically a Filmic competitor).
Unlocks iPhone's video camera capabilities
Blackmagic's digital film camera controls and image processing
Connects and uploads to Blackmagic’s new cloud storage
Apple ProRes 10-bit recording with proxy file generation
Look, this thing is free so there’s really no complaining.
It looks like it fits right in the middle of the standard camera app and Filmic.
Standard app barely has any image or storage controls, but you can quickly record ProRes 422 HQ and it looks really good.
BMD app gives you a lot more camera control, image monitoring tools, can record log and different ProRes flavors, and integrates with the rest of the BMD ecosystem (great if your workflow is on that and you need to quickly grab some insert shots).
Filmic is…whatever you want it to be. Different codec options, Frame.io C2C support, and multi-device support to control the camera from another device.
What do you make of the app?
In the broadcast space, there’s also a new ATEM 1 M/E panel and 80×80 Videohub.
